According to Hindu mythology, Lord Dhanvantari
is the discoverer of Ayurveda and called as god of Ayurvedic medicine. Lord
Dhanvantari was the first divine incarnation (Avatar) to pass its wisdom into
humans. Lord Dhanvantari first appears through the great churning of cosmic
ocean of milk (Samudra manthan) to distribute amrit (ambrosia, or Divine nectar)
to the demigods. When Ancient Ocean was being churned for the Nectar of
Immortality, 14-gems were produced. Amongst them Lord Dhanvantari is considered
as one. Due to taking the pot of Nectar in his hands he is also called "Sudhapani".
Lord Dhanvantari destroys unconstructiveness and blesses his devotees with good
health. Thirteenth day of 'Trayodasi' is celebrated for the appearance of Lord
Dhanvantari when moon is in its waxing phase.
