Mecca Masjid is a hundred yards southwest of the Charminar is the Mecca Masjid, so named because the bricks were brought from Mecca to build the central arch. It can accommodate 10,000 people and its huge arches & colonnades were fashioned out of single slabs of granite quarried 14 Km away. Mecca Masjid is poetry in stone, with a hall measuring 67m & soaring to a height of 54m Mecca Masjid is the biggest mosque in Hyderabad and lies within hundred yards to the southwest of Charminar. Mecca Masjid got its name from the faith that the bricks inserted over the central arch were baked out of clay brought from Mecca, and also from the grand mosque at Mecca on which it is patterned.
The construction of this Mecca Masjid was ongoing by Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah, the work continued during the reign of Abdullah Qutub Shah and Abul Hassan Tana Shah and was done in 1694 by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. . Fifteen graceful arches five to each of the three sides, support the roof. Along one side of the mosque are the tombs of the Nizams of Hyderabad. Another old mosque in this area is the Jama Masjid the oldest mosque in the city.
