The shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, perched atop a flank of Bandar Poonch peak & situated opposite to Gangotri.
Goddess Yamuna the river goddess is worshipped here and has special significance in Hindu scriptures. The idol is made of black marble.
The river Yamuna emerges from Yamunotri glacier which is at a height of 4420 m near the Kalind Mountain. This place was the home of Sage Asit.
Here a holy dip in the tank filled by hot springs, and cooking rice in its water is part of the rituals. The temple is open from May to November.
