It is believed that Lord Ayyappa has been born
out of the union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu (female form of 'Mohini'). Lord
Ayyappa is well known for his kindness. Lord Ayyappa has the power of both Lord
Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Mainly the Lord Ayyappan is a much respected god for
South Indian. They are also worshipped by most of the Hindus. Hariharaputra,
Hariharasuthan, Ayyappan, Manikanta, Shasta, Dharma shastha, Hariharan, and Veer
Manikant are the names of Lord Ayyappa. The Sabarimala (in Kerala) temple of
Ayyappa discourse the principle of Tat Tvam Asi. This temple is unique in all
over India and there is no dissimilarity of caste or religion to go in this
temple. Since the Lord Ayyappa symbolizes both the Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva in
one religion hence they are worshipped both as Protector and Deliverer. "Swamiye
Sharanam" is the famous mantra for Lord Ayyappa which can be directly translated
as Give me shelter, Ayyappa. Lord Ayyappa is said to have merged with the
Supreme Power of God.
